The Microalgae Project connects students with the living world in their own local environment. By collecting aquatic samples, discovering the microscopic life within them and seeing microscopic organisms transformed into film, students encounter nature at a scale they would rarely experience otherwise.
The project was created from a simple belief: young people need meaningful contact with nature if they are to value it, understand it and make better decisions about how we use the planet’s resources in the future. Microalgae offer an extraordinary way into that conversation. They are tiny, beautiful and largely unseen, yet fundamental to life on Earth.
Collect
Students collect water samples from their own local environment, making the science immediately personal and place-based.
Discover
AMOA examines the samples under the microscope and creates a customised short film revealing the organisms found within them.
Learn
The film returns to the classroom with supporting teacher resources, turning a local water sample into a deeper exploration of biology, ecosystems, sustainability and our relationship with the natural world.
'One student said that they couldn't believe the amount of life that was in freshwater that she didn't even know about'
Science Teacher
'Ultimately, the project was incredibly engaging and inspiring for both the students and the teaching staff'
Biology Teacher
'Being able to take samples from the local ecosystem and clearly see and compare the variety of microorganisms found in each location helped students make connection and take ownership over their samples'
